From Ambition to Fulfillment
I have been an Allied Health Professional (Physiotherapist) for 35 years. I established my first business in 1996, offering hydrotherapy from a heated pool in my backyard. In those days, I had 2 small children and it allowed me to enjoy the flexibility in work and home life whilst engaging in a profession where I felt that I had a purpose by helping others . As time went on, I became more interested in how I could develop my skills to help others with persistent pain. In 2004, I transitioned from offering hydrotherapy (Aquatic Physiotherapy), to undertaking my first venture into a partnership and opening a practice with a focus on functional rehabilitation and return to work. By this time, I had two more children. After the retirement of my first business partner and a wonderful first experience of a great working relationship, followed by a couple of years of operating the business by myself, I had no hesitation in asking an employee (with all the right attributes), to join me in a new partnership. It has been a great privilege to mentor him; grow and learn together to establish a very successful contemporary physiotherapy practice across 3 locations with 10 staff. Our shared vision of “A world where everybody has the skills, knowledge, opportunity and ability to recapture the important things in life after illness, injury or pain” has been pivotal in establishing a strong shared business focus.
My discovery of Simon Sinek’s work in 2017, created a platform of self reflection ; leading me to undertaking a Women in Leadership Course in 2018 and to becoming a Chartered Manager through IML in 2019. I have realised that I have been sustained in a rewarding career due to many deep seated values and an optimistic vision of what is possible in helping others. This includes the many lessons that I have learnt from often difficult and uncomfortable situations in my experiences of starting, building and operating a small health business.
I wish to share these experiences with you, in the hope that one idea or one experience will resonate for you, and help you to have a rewarding career by being in service to others. I hope that you will share with me on this venture so that we can all learn from each other?
I grew up in Hamilton and I went to “physio school” in Dunedin, New Zealand. Today, I live with my husband in Canberra, Australia. We have 4 young adult children, who are all finding their way in the world. We have a dog, Ollie. I enjoy visiting new and exciting places (limited for the moment to Australia); playing tennis; listening to podcasts; watching sport (especially rugby); recreational cycling around beautiful Canberra; spending time with friends and family and eating out.
